Meet Lucy: The Heart of the Spaeth Family

Lucy is the kind of dog who makes a homestead feel complete. Almost two years old, this standard Sheepadoodle has a personality that matches her striking appearance, always sporting her signature bow and perfectly trimmed coat. She’s loyal, intuitive, and loving in every way, and from the moment she arrived at the Spaeth family’s homestead in Tyler, Texas, she became an indispensable part of their daily life.

The Spaeth family knew they wanted a Sheepadoodle for a very specific reason. They needed a hypoallergenic dog capable of herding their goats, donkeys, and chickens, and someone who could fit in with a bustling family that already adored doodles. With a five-year-old mini Aussie doodle already part of the family, finding a larger herding dog with the same playful and intelligent doodle temperament was ideal. After careful research and connecting with a breeder they trusted, Lucy came home in January 2024, ready to bring her boundless energy and heart to every corner of the farm.

A typical day for Lucy is, well, busy and full of purpose. She herds livestock from pasture to pen, keeps a watchful eye over every outdoor task, and then comes in for some well-earned cuddles on the couch. And she never forgets to have a little fun...she hops over a few pastures to visit her boyfriend, Chip, a fellow poodle, with effortless grace. The Spaeths rely on a “beep collar” for these adventures, and Lucy responds instantly, bounding back to the yard at the sound of a single beep. Her intelligence and intuition make every task look easy, and it’s impossible not to marvel at her skills.

What makes this sweet furry family member so special, though, is her bond with the family. Even among many animals, she has a unique connection with the Spaeths’ youngest son, who considers her his #1 animal best friend (just look at that photo above). She follows him around, guards him, and joins in his playtime whenever she can. Watching their friendship grow is a reminder of just how much love and loyalty a dog can bring into a home.

I can’t tell you how proud it makes me to see Lucy thriving in her role on the homestead. The care, pre-training, and love that went into her before she came home shines through every single day.
