Caring for Your Doodle in the Colder Months

When fall finally sweeps through Texas, it feels like the world takes a deep breath. The mornings are crisp, the evenings settle in softly, and our doodles seem to soak it all up right along with us. But even with the relief from the summer heat, the cooler months bring their own rhythm of care, especially if you are raising a new puppy or helping your doodle adjust to the change in season.

It is easy to assume grooming can take a back seat once the temperatures drop, but doodles need consistent coat care year-round. A longer winter coat might look cozy, but it can mat quickly if it is not brushed often. Moisture, grass, and dry air can all lead to tangles and itchy skin. Keeping up with regular brushing and maintaining small trims around their eyes, paws, and sanitary areas helps them stay clean and comfortable. A well-kept coat actually insulates better, which keeps your doodle warmer when the weather turns cool.

If you have recently brought home a puppy, you will want to take things a little slower. Young doodles are still building their immune systems, so it is best to wait until they have completed their vaccinations before heading out to public spaces. You can still safely introduce them to new experiences at home by letting them explore different surfaces, hear new sounds, and meet trusted friends or family dogs. Those little moments of gentle socialization make a big difference later on.

The shift in weather can also dry out your doodle’s skin and paws, so a little extra TLC goes a long way. A paw balm can prevent cracking, and a moisturizing shampoo or leave-in conditioner keeps their coat soft and healthy. If you notice dry patches, brushing in a small amount of coconut oil or using a vet-approved supplement can help from the inside out.

As the air cools, some doodles get a bit more playful while others prefer to curl up on the couch. Either way, this is a wonderful season to slow down and enjoy time together. Take advantage of those cool afternoons for short backyard play sessions or cozy evenings snuggled inside. Keep an eye on their food portions too, since less activity can mean they need a little less food, while pups still growing might need a touch more.

Fall and winter are some of our favorite times with our doodles here in Texas. The air feels calm, the routines settle in, and there is something special about watching your puppy grow through the seasons. At Howdy Doodles, we love sharing what we have learned about raising happy, healthy doodles and helping you feel confident as you care for your own.
