Creating a Simple Routine for Your Doodle

One of the best things you can do for your adorable new Doodle puppy is set up a simple, consistent daily routine. Puppies thrive on structure, and having predictable rhythms helps them feel safe and secure. It also makes things like potty training, crate time, and bedtime a whole lot easier for everyone. A good routine doesn’t have to be complicated (or stress you out), it just needs to be steady and clear to help you and your puppy settle in.

Start the day with a potty break as soon as you wake up. Puppies usually need to go as soon as they’re up, so head straight outside. After that, give them some playtime followed by breakfast. Keeping feeding times at the same hour each day helps regulate their digestion and their potty habits. Most families feed their puppies twice a day, once in the morning and again in the early evening.
Once breakfast is done, build in some structured activity. This could be a short training session, or a little play in the backyard. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, just enough to stretch their legs and burn off some energy. After that, it’s crate time. Puppies need a lot of sleep, so a mid-morning nap helps reset them and gives you a moment to breathe and catch up on things you may need to get done.
The middle of the day usually includes a potty break, lunch if your puppy is still on three meals, and a little more low-key play. Think tug-of-war, snuffle mats, or supervised exploring inside. Follow that with another nap. Remember, puppies can sleep as many as 16 to 20 hours a day when they’re young. That rest is what helps them grow, learn, and stay healthy. Late afternoon is a great time for more playtime in your yard, more focused training, or a quick trip in the car. The key is keeping things positive and not too overstimulating. Then it’s dinner time, ideally two to three hours before bed so they have time to digest and get that last potty break in (yes, it’s a little like potty-training a toddler!). After dinner, keep play gentle. This is a good time to introduce chew toys or cuddle on the couch while your pup winds down.
Bedtime should come around the same time each night. One last potty trip, a little calming snuggle time, and then into the crate. Keep lights low, voices quiet, and keep the routine steady to help them stay regulate. Your puppy will learn the rhythm and settle in more easily when they know what’s coming next. If your pup needs help settling, white noise or a warm blanket can go a long way.
At the end of the day, every puppy is different. You’ll find your own rhythm as you go, and it’s okay to tweak things to fit your family. But starting with a simple structure helps your Doodle puppy feel secure and loved as they adjust to their new home. And if you ever feel unsure or just want to share how your routine is going, we’re always here to cheer you on and help in any way we can! Our goal is always well-adjusted and happy families!
